Decorative shutters are fixed beside the opening for proportion, color, and style. They may use lightweight or hollow-backed materials and should not be represented as closing, latching, shading, securing, or protecting the opening.

Functional shutters

Functional shutters use suitable panels and hardware to swing, project, slide, or roll. Dimensions, weight, hinges, pintles, throw, center meeting, latch, holdbacks, facade, fasteners, and clearances must all work.

Installation is different

Fixed mounts need appropriate stand-off and fastening without distorting the panel or wall. Operable systems need aligned load-bearing attachment, safe movement, water-management details, and accessible latching.

Performance requires separate proof

A shutter that closes is not automatically rated for wind, impact, security, fire, or other performance. Use product approval, engineering, installation, and inspection for the exact project.
